Vitamin B-5

Vitamin B-5 is a component of coenzyme A (CoA), a central figure in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. CoA is involved in the conversion of choline to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and in the synthesis of the growth, stress, and sex hormones. B-5 is therefore needed for the growth, maintenance and repair of all cells and tissues, and for memory and learning.

Severe deficiency of this vitamin is assumed to be rare, but low pantothenate levels are connected with heavy drinking, use of oral contraceptives, diabetes, and disorders of the digestive tract. Animal experiments suggest that pantothenic acid requirements are increased during growth, pregnancy and lactation. Deficiency of B-5 results in generalized malaise and elevation of blood triglycerides.

Pantothenic acid has been used, with varying success, to treat liver conditions, arthritis, and constipation; to prevent urinary retention after surgery or childbirth; to curb fatigue; and (together with biotin) to treat baldness.
