Policosanol

Policosanol is a mixture of long-chain fatty alcohols obtained from the waxes of sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) and other plants, the main component of which is 1-octacosanol.

In studies in humans and other animals, policosanol supplementation has resulted in:

  • significant reductions in LDL serum cholesterol and increases in HDL (‘good’) cholesterol;
  • amelioration of coronary heart disease;
  • increased utilization (hence reduction) of visceral fat;
  • improved muscle endurance.
